How to play

How to play Reversi

  1. Choose an opponent Play black against the computer, or choose Two players to take turns on the same device. Changing the mode starts a new game.
  2. Find a legal square Tap or click a dotted square. Keyboard players can use Tab and Enter to choose a legal move.
  3. Flip a line Your new disc must trap opposing discs between it and another disc of your color. Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines all count, and one move can flip several lines.
  4. Finish the board A side with no legal move passes automatically. When neither side can move, the game counts the discs. The higher count wins, and equal counts are a draw.

Think about the corners

A corner disc cannot be flipped. Before playing beside an empty corner, check whether your move would let the opponent take it.

Common questions

Reversi FAQ

Can I play Reversi on a phone?

Yes. Tap a dotted square to place a disc. You can play the computer or pass the phone between two players.

Does two-player mode work online?

No. Two players share one screen and take turns. This version has no remote multiplayer or accounts.

Why did my turn get skipped?

You must pass if you have no legal move. The game does this automatically. It ends only when neither side can move, which can happen before every square is filled.

How does Undo turn work?

Against the computer, Undo turn returns to the position before your last move, including any computer moves that followed. In two-player mode it reverses one move.

Is this Reversi game open source?

Yes. This is an original PCder implementation under the MIT license. The game links to its source files and license. It uses no external libraries or artwork.

Does Reversi save my game?

No. Reloading the page starts a new game. The computer uses a simple positional strategy, so it is suitable for casual practice rather than expert analysis.
